Work begins on new Intown public seating area.

Parks Department workers are converting a grass area to brick on Temple Street.

by John Alphonse

Work began early Thursday morning on the conversion of the grass island area outside Nickelodeon Cinemas to brick, benches and a designated "hackey sack" area for Intown dwellers.

Previously, area benches were relocated to another grass island in the vicinity. The second phase entails expanding the available outdoor seating by conversion of the grass island area outside the Nickelodeon.

Plans also are in the works to replace the removed benches on the cobblestone area outside Green Mountain Coffee Roasters.

City officials told area patrons on Thursday that removal of the benches was the result of a misreading of the year-old drawings outlining the project, and not the result of business owners requesting the move, as was previously stated by sources at City Hall.
