All that remains in recognition of the birthplace of the famous American poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, is a granite stone marker and empty flagpole near the foot of Fore Street, across from Xpress Copy Service.

This brass plaque has been reattached to its stone marker and workers will be polishing it soon. |
The brass plaque on the face of the stone has been missing for several years and was presumed stolen. However construction workers from Keeley Construction unearthed the plaque last week while preparing the sidewalk and monument area for reconstruction. Workers speculated that years of exposure to frost and moisture dislodged the plaque from the stone, and it has remained unseen face-down in the dirt for at least two years.
The project is being paid for by Shipyard Brewing Co.
