The carriage is ready and waiting, but where have all the horses gone? This pastoral scene behind Bubba's Sulky Lounge on Portland Street creates a thought-provoking juxtaposition to present-day life. This editor still doesn't understand why low-tech and high-tech can't coexist in American society, and why the lives of wonderful animals such as horses are spent in practically useless isolation while we all exist in our own self-consuming mind traps.

Portland has an interesting twist on recycling programs as much of the material ends up blowing throughout city streets, finding its way into the sewer system and ultimately Casco Bay, as seen in this curbside photo along Cumberland Avenue. Proper city-provided containers would help alleviate the problem as it's logistically impossible to notify residents of changing weather conditions which may bring strong winds, airlifting recyclables out of their topless bins.
